BNSF Railway Pavement Management Plan

BNSF is one of North America’s premier freight transportation companies, moving consumer products, industrial products, agricultural products and coal over 32,500 route miles in 28 states and three Canadian provinces. With a history dating back more than 160 years, BNSF is the product of the merging and acquisition of nearly 400 different railway lines and serves 40 ports and 25 intermodal facilities.

PSI worked with project partners on a pilot study to implement a pavement management system for approximately 14.1 million square feet of asphalt and concrete pavement at the Cicero and Alliance intermodal facilities. These pavements support the transportation of intermodal containers, trailers, and other freight traffic. PSI performed an ASTM D 6433 PCI survey, developed maintenance and repair policies and system priorities, future pavement surface condition and structural requirements, and a projected 10-year budget plan for pavement maintenance and repair.
