Full Depth Reclamation – Whitman and Commercial Street

The City of Leavenworth, Washington received funding from the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board to reconstruct two streets totaling 0.5 miles. PSI worked with project partners to evaluate cost-effective pavement design strategies for rehabilitating these streets with new hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement.

Our design investigation was based on two design alternatives: 1) HMA overlay on the existing pavements and 2) full depth reclamation (FDR) by constructing an in-place mechanically stabilized base layer by pulverizing the existing HMA and mixing with a predetermined amount of crushed aggregate and subgrade material followed by moisture conditioning and compaction.
